Media Center
Angela Andersen, Library Media Specialist Karon Neal, Library Media Assistant
The mission of the Forest Pines Elementary Library Media Center is to provide students access to literacy and research skills so that they become effective users of information and life-long readers.
Monday-Friday 8:45-3:45
Students have open checkout in the morning between 8:45 and 9:15 Monday-Thursday. They should report to their teacher before coming to the Library Media Center.
Students may also checkout at anytime during the school day with teacher permission. Students will also checkout books when their class comes for Library Media Lessons.
On Friday mornings between 8:45 and 9:15 we have Book Swap. Book Swap is for students to come trade books from home that they have read and are finished with for different books brought in by other students. These need to be gently used books without missing pages or covers.
Kindergarten and First grade students: 1 book Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders: 2 books Parents: up to 5 books.
The check out period is ten school days. If a child finishes a book and wants to check out another one, he/she may return it anytime.
We stress the importance of caring for our books. Please make sure students carry their books in a plastic bag even within their book bag. This helps the book stay clean and dry. It also helps students keep up with their library books. Students will be given a special Library Media bag with their name on it to use. If that bag wears out or is lost, students may use a clean plastic bag from a grocery or department store.
Parents are always invited to come and check out books to read with their child. We ask that you carry your books in a plastic bag as well.
We stress that students must be responsible for their books and keep them in a safe place where they can find them. If a student loses his/her books, look everywhere that you can think of for the book--your house, child’s classroom, daycare, car etc. If the book cannot be found, we can provide you with the cost of the book so that you can pay for the book. Checks should be made payable to Forest Pines Drive Elementary School and have a driver’s license number written on it. You will receive a receipt when the money is sent in. Keep your receipt just in case it is found. You will have to bring the book to the Library Media Center, and the receipt to the secretary in the office to receive a refund.
Second through Fifth Grade classes will come to the Library Media Center on a flexible schedule. Mrs. Andersen will be meeting with all teachers to plan lessons that relate to topics being studied in the classroom. These classes may come for a week at a time to finish a project and rotate with other grades. Kindergarten and First Grade will come on a set schedule to have lessons, reading time and checkout.
We need you!!! Parents are invited to volunteer in the Library Media Center all year long. You can shelve books, process books and help with various projects. You contact the PTA volunteer coordinator or email Mrs. Andersen at aandersen@wcpss.net. You can also stop by and sign-up.
We will be having a Book Fair in the fall each year. As soon as it is scheduled, we will let you know the dates. We will need parents to volunteer during the Fair. The PTA will send out sign-up sheets shortly before the Fair.
If your child has outgrown books and you like to donate them, they are welcome. The books should be very gently used and not torn in any way. Mrs. Andersen will be reviewing the books that are donated. If the book is not put into the Library Media Center, then they will be put into our student book swap or given to classrooms.
On your child’s birthday, you can purchase a book for the Library Media Center. This book can be a favorite of your child or can be chosen from a list that Mrs. Andersen will make. The book will be dedicated with a bookplate to your child and placed in the collection. Also, your child would be the first person to check out the book from the Library Media Center.
